This book challenges the prevalent view that the Enlightenment of the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries was primarily a secular and atheistic movement. It critiques this interpretation as narrow and argues that Enlightenment thought encompassed diverse theological perspectives, including Anglican, Dissenting, Lutheran, and deistic viewpoints. The volume highlights the influence of the Enlightenment on Roman Catholic and Jewish theology as well. It disputes the stereotype of 'Enlightenment rationalism' and, in its final chapter, explores the biblical and ecclesial origins of the Enlightenment ideal, reclaiming it for Christian faith.
